A Consortia Licensing Model
A traditional licensing model is inappropriate for NEWT; most of its value is in customisation and development arising from consulting. Nor is it appropriate for CFS to retain NEWT in-house purely for its own consultancy: the code is strongest with exposure to the most challenging tasks undertaken in industry and research groups.
For the foreseeable future there will be a strong market for tailored CFD software solutions. Consultancies will never be able to provide this through COTS alone, and research organisations have limited ability to vend their IP to industry unless through an established commercial package with a support network.
This new model (CNC) for NEWT licensing provides more incentives for contributions and maintenance activities. It will make it easier for academic institutions to commercialise research and will make NEWT source available to consultancies for the first time. Collaborative Aims
- For Institutions : We wish to make it easier for researchers to commercialise work performed using NEWT. CFS can offer strategy and marketing assistance to collaborators who build tools complementary to NEWT. Researchers will be able to market their own IP through CFS instruments free of charge, offering a no-risk approach to commercialisation.
- For Industrial Organisations : To provide a robust code which is strengthened through the actions of the CNC. Industry will have access to the network of institutions and consultancies, offering a range of expertise outside of CFS.
- For Consultancies : Source access provides a huge boost to the capabilities of any CFD consultancy. As well as opening new markets, consultancies will be able to offer services to those currently deploying NEWT. Institutions will also be on hand for research projects and for finding personnel highly skilled in the deployment of NEWT.
Collective Aims: To establish NEWT as the leading source access CFD package in use, and to allow organisations other than CFS to benefit from its commercial exploitation.
What software is available under the CNC?
At present only the NEWT suite of software is available as source code. However, the suite also requires use of the CFS product, GigaCell®, a special binary release of which is available to the CNC.
